Silicone kitchenware: the key to baking molds and tableware in this category
Baking molds, scrapers, spoons, folding bowls, baby plates, steaming pads - silicone kitchenware is one of the hottest silicone categories in the C-end market. This category seems to have a low threshold (just making a silicone bowl), but in fact, there are different requirements for material compliance, structural design, and appearance quality. This article discusses the secrets of silicone kitchenware from the perspectives of production and procurement.
Material compliance is the bottom line
All silicone kitchen utensils that come into contact with food must meet the food contact standards:
Domestic sales: GB 4806.11 (Silicone Rubber for Food Contact)+Total Migration Test, which is a mandatory standard. Export to the EU: EU framework regulations+LFGB (German standard, widely recognized by European customers as LFGB, stricter than FDA, including sensory testing). Export to the United States: FDA 21 CFR 177.2600.
The most prone to problems in actual execution:
Color masterbatch and additives - if the rubber material is food grade and the color masterbatch is not, the entire set of materials is not qualified. Colored kitchenware should include the food grade certification of the colorants. Spray parts - coated spatulas (anti stick spray), the compliance of coating migration needs to be evaluated separately. No odor - LFGB's sensory testing has clear requirements for taste and odor, and kitchen utensils with insufficient post vulcanization cannot pass this test.
Several special points in structural design
Temperature resistance range nominal - silicone kitchenware is generally marked as -40~230 ℃. This 230 ℃ is the short-term oven temperature, not the long-term soaking temperature. Product labeling should correspond to actual testing.
Handle and Thin Wall Parts - The handle part of the silicone shovel is subjected to lever force, and the wall thickness design is insufficient to tear after a few months of use. The style of metal embedded skeleton (shovel spoon type), embedded parts, and silicone coating design determine the lifespan.
Folding and flexible structures - The folding parts of folding bowls and water bottles are fatigue points that are repeatedly bent, and the material and wall thickness must be verified according to fatigue.
Suction cup type - The suction cup of baby food tray requires negative pressure holding force, and the hardness of silicone and the design of suction cup flange determine whether it can suck or not. This performance can only be measured and cannot be relied on.
The appearance quality requirement is higher than that of industrial parts
C-end products are directly placed on shelves, with appearance standards similar to consumer electronics:
No visible mold line (the parting surface is either made in the visual blind zone or processed afterwards); No bubbles, no impurities (transparent and light colored parts are particularly sensitive); Bright colors and consistent batches (when different batches of products are placed together at the retail end, color differences can be seen at a glance); Surface texture (many kitchen utensils require spraying food grade texture solution, which feels dry and non sticky).
Packaging and certification labels
The packaging printing content of C-end kitchenware has compliance requirements: material labeling, temperature resistance range, execution standards, and production license information (domestic food contact products have production license requirements). Export products also require labeling regulations from the target country. The "food grade" claim on the packaging must be supported by corresponding testing reports, and the slogan without a report is a compliance risk on the platform.
The business characteristics of this category
Silicone kitchenware is a typical category with low individual value, high appearance requirements, and seasonal fluctuations (the peak season for baking molds is in autumn, winter, and before holidays). For factories, to enter this market, they need to have: a food grade raw material system, production capacity for appearance parts (dust-free level does not need to be medical grade but better than industrial parts), stable color matching ability, and the ability to meet the inspection standards of retail customers (many customers conduct AQL sampling, and the appearance AQL is more than twice as strict as industrial parts).
For those who are engaged in branding and e-commerce, the order of choosing a silicone kitchenware factory is: first check whether the food contact test report is a finished product report (not a rubber material report), then check the mold line and color difference control of the appearance sample, and finally negotiate the price. Assuming the price difference is not significant, the first two factors determine whether you will be overwhelmed by negative reviews and returns after being listed.
